When Should You Get Your Hearing Tested?
It can be difficult to know when you should get your hearing tested, but here are a few questions to ask yourself:

-
Do you feel like people are mumbling?
-
Are you struggling to follow group conversations?
-
Are people telling you that your TV is too loud?
-
Do you have a persistent ringing in your ears?
-
Are you missing phone calls, doorbells, or alarms?
Answering ‘yes’ to any of these questions can be a sign to get your hearing checked, but there are other reasons and you should always be safe. If you’re unsure about anything or have noticed a change in your hearing, you should book a test as soon as possible.

FAQs
1. What To Expect From a Hearing Test?
The Hearing & Speech Assessment
Your private hearing test will usually last about an hour. Please ensure you give yourself plenty of time on the day of your appointment. Both of our clinics have ample, free, on-site parking and toilet facilities.
What to expect:

-
Case History: We’ll spend time getting to know you, talking about the recent health of your ears and hearing.
-
Otoscopy: This is a visual examination of the outer ear to make sure it’s healthy. You’ll be able to see the results on our client display screen.
-
Tympanometry: This test measures the function of the eardrum and middle ear.
-
Pure tone assessment: This involves playing a series of test tones through headphones for you to respond to. This provides us with an audiogram, which is very similar to a prescription for your eyes.
-
Speech in quiet test (AB word test): Here, we’ll measure your ability to hear speech in a quiet environment.
-
Speech in noise test (QuickSIN test): This measures your ability to hear speech in noisy environments.

Your Test Results
Once we have completed your hearing test, we’ll explain your results in clear, simple language. We’ll also email you a written report and a copy of your audiogram, usually within 48 hours.
What will be the outcome of my appointment?

-
No hearing loss: We may discover that you don’t have any hearing loss. In this case, we can suggest other solutions for your hearing issues, such as our ear wax removal service.
-
GP referral: In some cases, we might need to refer you to your GP for further testing. With your permission, we’ll send your GP a referral letter and a copy of your test results.
-
Hearing aids: Your tests might reveal some level of hearing loss and you might benefit from wearing hearing aids. In this case, we’ll discuss your options with you.
2. How Long Does a Full Hearing Test Take?
The duration of a private hearing test will depend on the type of test you’ve booked. Our general hearing health check-ups typically take around 30 minutes. A full hearing and speech assessment, or hearing test with hearing aid reprogramming, will normally take about 90 minutes.
3. What Happens if You Fail a Hearing Test?
Unfortunately, in some cases, your hearing test will show that you have some level of hearing loss. It’s essential to address the underlying causes early, minimising the damage to your hearing. The sooner you get tested, the earlier you can get advice on how to protect your hearing from further damage.
At the Hearing Excellence Clinic, you’ll receive in-depth and personalised advice on the results of your test. We can also provide information on how to fit your hearing difficulties into your lifestyle and how best to avoid causing more damage in your day-to-day life.
