How Does Ear Wax Removal with
Microsuction Work?
Before we begin the treatment, we’ll ask you some routine medical questions to ensure that it’s safe to use microsuction for your ears and perform a visual examination of your ear using an otoscope. An otoscope magnifies your ear and allows us to see inside more effectively. It also takes a picture that we can show you to compare how your ears looked before and after!
You’ll then sit in our clinical treatment chair so that the treatment can begin. It will start with the clinician placing a specula (small plastic cone) into your ear canal and using our hospital-grade microsuction unit to create a vacuum through it. A sterile suction probe is then placed through the specula and the clinician will gently vacuum the excess wax away from the ear canal.
Throughout the treatment, your clinician will wear full PPE, including either a head-mounted microscope or premium hand-held endoscope to enable them to see deep into the ear canal while removing the wax. Once the treatment is complete, your clinician will take another image of your ear canal, and show you both the before and after images so that you can compare the results.

Is Microsuction Ear Wax Removal in Sheffield & Barnsley Safe?
When performed by experienced and trained professionals like Mr Paul Jackson or Miss Chloe Coopland, micro-suction ear wax removal is perfectly safe. In fact, it’s one of the safest ways to remove ear wax from your ears.
Between them they have over 24 years of combined experience and always ensures that this procedure is only used when it’s safe to do so.
In both our Sheffield and Barnsley clinics, we also use the best quality equipment available, such as our hospital-grade suction machine. This ensures that the suction pressure from the machine is constant and steady, with no sudden drops or increases in pressure that might cause issues with your eardrums.
Can Ear Wax Removal with Microsuction Damage Your Ears?
When performed on a healthy ear, there’s almost no risk involved with earwax removal from microsuction. However, if you’ve recently suffered from a perforated eardrum, ear infection, or other ear injuries, this could cause complications with the treatment if it’s used too soon.
To combat this, we always conduct a detailed medical interview with every patient and perform a visual inspection of the ear to check for issues or damage. This ensures that no issue is missed, even if the patient isn’t aware that they had it, and will keep the process as safe as possible.
As with all of our ear wax removal techniques, to minimise discomfort and lower the risk of side effects, it’s important to soften the wax with ear drops for 3-5 days prior to treatment.
How to Prepare for Ear Microsuction Ear Wax Removal in Sheffield & Barnsley
It’s important to try to soften the wax in your ears before you arrive. This makes it easier to remove and minimises discomfort that can be caused by it pulling away from the ear canal if it’s too hard.
We recommend that you use a trusted wax softener for at least 3-5 days before your microsuction ear wax removal treatment. Our suggested brand is Earol, as we find this to be the safest and most effective at softening the wax.
It’s important to be aware that when you first start using a wax softener, you may find that your ears feel blocked or your hearing worsens. This is a short-term issue that’s caused by the wax softening and shifting around in your ear canal.
If you’ve already tried ear wax removal and are still experiencing hearing problems, take a look at our hearing test page and book a consultation for the best advice on your hearing care.

Ear Irrigation FAQs
1. What Is Microsuction Ear Wax Removal?
Earwax removal microsuction is a process that uses a suction device to remove excessive or impacted earwax from the ear canal. It’s one of the most effective and safest methods of earwax removal.
2. How Do I Know If I Need Microsuction Ear Wax Removal?
Our ears are naturally self-cleaning and for most people, earwax is not something that needs to be removed. However, if you experience a build-up of earwax that causes problems, such as muffled hearing or a feeling of fullness, professional ear wax removal is likely required to reduce your discomfort and improve your hearing.
3. How Long Does Microsuction Take?
Microsuction earwax removal typically takes around 30 -45 minutes. The length of your appointment will depend on the severity of your wax build-up and the amount of wax that needs to be removed.
At Hearing Excellence Clinic, all our ear wax removal consultations come with our Wax-Clear Guarantee, which means you only pay for one appointment, no matter how many sessions it takes to clear your ears.
4. Who Can Perform Microsuction?
Only fully trained and accredited healthcare professionals should perform microsuction earwax removal. At Hearing Excellence, our microsuction procedures are performed by either our Clinic Director Paul Jackson or our Senior Hearing Care Assistant Chloe Coopland, both of whom have undergone specialised microsuction training.
5. Where Can I Get Microsuction Done?
If you are suffering from a build-up of ear wax or wax impacted, the best way to get treatment is to visit a private audiology clinic. This will ensure that you’re seen quickly, reducing the length of your discomfort. Previously, ear wax removal could be performed by GPs, but most GP surgeries no longer offer this service.
6. Which Is Better: Microsuction or Syringing?
Microsuction is a much safer and more effective procedure than syringing. At Hearing Excellence Clinic, we do not offer ear syringing as it’s an outdated method and can cause damage to the eardrum. Instead, we offer microsuction and ear irrigation, which is the modern alternative to ear syringing.
7. Do You Need to Soften Ear Wax Before Microsuction?
Yes, it’s important to soften your ear wax before your microsuction appointment. This makes it much easier for the probe to remove the wax and makes the procedure quicker. At Hearing Excellence Clinic, we recommend you use Earol for at least 3-5 days before your microsuction ear wax removal treatment.
8. Does Microsuction Hurt?
Provided microsuction is performed by a trained clinician, like the team at Hearing Excellence Clinic, the procedure is usually painless. Some patients might experience mild discomfort as the wax is removed, but this discomfort can be reduced by softening your ear wax for at least 3 days before your appointment.

9. Can You Have Microsuction With an Ear Infection?
Although microsuction is a safe procedure for those who have had ear infections previously, if you have a current ear infection it’s best to visit your GP for treatment. Once your ear infection is healed and you are still suffering from earwax build-up, our clinicians will be able to safely perform microsuction to retain your hearing to normal.
9. Can Microsuction Cause Tinnitus?
On very rare occasions, microsuction can lead to temporary tinnitus. However, this usually resolves within a few hours to a few days.
10. How Can I Book An Appointment For Microsuction?
You can book an appointment through our website or by calling our Sheffield or Barnsley clinics directly. Our friendly staff will be happy to assist you.
